What does counselling cost? Print

If you want to find out how much counselling will cost you, talk to the administrator at your local Relationship Services Office. They are the people who can agree a rate for the counselling with you.

Our counselling rates vary around the country, usually they are slightly lower in smaller centres.

We do have some funding from government and community sources to provide some counselling at a lower rate. Talk to your local administrator to find out what is available for you. Are you eligible for free counselling?

Ordinarily the charge is for each appointment, usually about 50 minutes long. The cost is the same whether the counselling is for an individual or for a couple. The rates may vary if a larger group is involved.

Here are some general guidelines about cost.

  • Our standard rate is between $85 and $95 for an appointment.
  • If you have a Community Services Card the rate is usually between $45 and $55.
  • A lower rate may also be available when children are involved or affected by the issues you want to bring to counselling.
  • If you are on a low income, or if financial pressures make counselling hard to afford, discuss your situation with the local administrator and a lower rate may be available.
  • There is also Family Court counselling available for couples in some situations. If you are trying to resolve relationship issues, or to work out agreements about children if you are separating you can contact the Family Court Co-ordinator at your local Family Court. You may be eligible for up to six sessions of counselling paid for by the court.
